My MUSE | Meet Milly Hewat Wall

Hello everyone,

Olivia here, to introduce you to this week’s MyMUSE: the vivacious, driven and deeply creative, Milly Hewat Wall.

An integral player in Auckland’s PR scene, Milly (alongside brother Henry) is a co-founder of Someday Studios, one of New Zealand’s most exciting creative agencies. Together, Milly and Henry work with an array of incredible brands to create considered, provocative and iconic campaigns. When she’s not busy with work, Milly adores spending time with her beautiful daughter, Coco and husband Ollie.

A long-time friend of MUSE (and of mine), Milly is everything you could want in a muse. A lover of art, fashion and beautiful interiors, she feels most at home in a creative space. She’s warm and engaging, with a wicked sense of humour. Clever and ambitious, with an innate appreciation for beauty. Passionate and inspiring, with an exquisite sense of style. She’s the real deal, and we absolutely adore her.

I sat down with Milly to talk about inspiring designers, becoming a mother and the power of a truly great outfit.

Milly, hello! Can you tell me a bit about your business SOMEDAY, and how your career path led you to where you are today?

Of course. After studying politics and media communications, I worked in advertising at both big agencies and small independents. Someday was born when my brother and I realised we wanted to pursue more creative challenges. Our holistic approach means we can be pretty fluid, every day is totally different which I love.

Can you share some of the challenges you’ve faced balancing owning a business and being a mother?

It's definitely a juggle having your own business and a baby, especially when Someday was in its infancy – I didn’t really catch a break. But at the same time, work really fulfills me. It makes me a better mother and a better person – I’m actually more productive than ever. Being someone that was rather unstructured, I’m now a turbo organiser, as my time is precious. Being a mother has taught me how to be more present in the moment and to appreciate the little things, as Coco does. And learning to play like a child again.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’d love to say I have a signature style, but I’m a bit of a chameleon. I like dressing for an occasion, who I’m seeing that day, how I’m feeling – or how I want to feel. At work I live in denim, then I dress that up or down with heels and blazers. I love playing with layers and pairing super baggy silhouettes with sharpness. I definitely need to put more effort into creating outfits, when I do put the effort in, I love it.  I’m often thinking about what I want to wear when I’m lying in bed – and then if it actually translates from inside my head to how it looks in reality, I’m like ‘YES, I am going to have a great day’ (laughs).

I see Someday being fully established so I can travel a bit more, visit the best art fairs and maybe open a gallery and concept store … dream big right?!

Is there a designer or artist that inspires you?

I’m so inspired by fashion designers; the ones that are heavily influenced by the art world, the research, insight and storytelling they put into their collections, and their shows. Designers like Dries Van Noten, Raf Simons, Rick Owens and Schirapelli. But the mastermind behind the fashion world’s best shows is Alexandre De Betak. The world he creates for these fashion houses and brands is a truly astounding mix of creativity, production skill and pure magic. The Dior shows during Raf’s era, the Jil Sander dinner for a fragrance launch, the glitzy YSL shows beneath the Eiffel Tower, the first Dior couture show for Maria Grazia … go get the book!

What is on your MUSE wishlist at the moment?

I love all the Khaite. Tibi denim, always. I love the Agua Bendita swimwear. And I adore the Imperial Coat by emerging brand Liberowe.
